Akhtar gained a law degree in 1993 at Thames Valley University before completing his LPC at The College of Law in Guildford in 1994. He then trained at a niche practice in Harrow before joining a leading firm in London’s Mayfair, as an assistant solicitor.

Akhtar’s initial enthusiasm was with human rights work. He was soon appointed head of the Immigration Department and subsequently also the head of the Criminal Department. He secured LSC franchises for the two departments and also developed business immigration and white collar criminal work.

He went on to gain a reputation as a specialist in the areas of National Security, Terrorism, Complex Fraud and Business Crime. He successfully represented various high profile clients deemed to be a national security risk or engaged in international terrorism, on the basis of new highly controversial law and procedures. These cases often attracted interest from the press, human rights organisations and other leading lawyers. He conducted some of the first cases heard before the Special Immigration Appeals Commission. These cases became legal precedents.

In the year before becoming a partner, he developed his expertise in complex fraud. In doing so, he conducted commercial as well as criminal litigation cases. Before leaving in October 2003, to set up practice in Luton, the bulk of his workload was in the field of commercial litigation.

Akhtar is an advocate of alternatives to litigation and frequently achieves his clients' objectives cost effectively through skilful negotiation with their opponents.

At Bedfords, Akhtar heads the criminal and civil/commercial litigation departments.
